I am currently at work on a book-length project about the (feminist) rhetorical
construction of authority in the three largest ancillary fields surrounding
deafnessdeaf education, audiology, and sign language interpretingsince
those fields are occupied by almost 90% women in each case. My chapter
on sign language interpreting, called Interpreting Women examines some
of the tensions and ethical dynamics between these (largely female) interpreters
and their clients as they work to give rhetorical agencyto bring voiceto
deaf people in individual interactions, public forums, and in scenes of
medical, legal, and consumer encounters.
