I am currently at work on a book-length project about the (feminist) rhetorical
construction of “authority” in the three largest ancillary fields surrounding
deafness—deaf education, audiology, and sign language interpreting—since
those fields are occupied by almost 90% women in each case. My chapter
on sign language interpreting, called “Interpreting Women” examines some
of the tensions and ethical dynamics between these (largely female) interpreters
and their “clients” as they work to give rhetorical agency—to bring “voice”—to
deaf people in individual interactions, public forums, and in scenes of
medical, legal, and consumer encounters.
