This page has a table with two columns: the left column has a screen shot of The Mirror of Permanence, right right column explains the way that the graphic appeared as a Flash animation.

Description of The Mirror of Obliteration Graphic:

In the original version of The Mirror of Simple Annihilated Souls (1) each of the main text pages had a Flash animation in the far left column.  Here, I have reproduced a screen shot of one moment of the animation for The Mirror of Obliteration. The Flash graphic was designed to suggest associations and connections with the controlling idea of that theme.  Also, names of one or more of the Threaded Voices appeared on the screen in the course of the animation.  In this Flash animation, you would have seen a transparent graphic of a screen shot of VisiCalc - an early spreadsheet software - with a moving mirror in the background.  This software image reminds us of the simplicity of the software in use twenty years ago.  Because, essentially, spreadsheet programs have become more complex but still perform essentially the same functions, we are encouraged to think about the ways in which obliteration of the older programs has not necessarily brought us easier-to-use tools.  The spreadsheet graphic fades and darkens to reveal the moving mirror.  The spreadsheet is rendered in shades of grey; the mirror moving behind is in beige, gold, and white.  The outdated software concretizes the concept of obliteration; strangely enough, this software is one of the few that will still run on contemporary machines.   Identification is in brick red.
