    9.  Although a theory of speech genres was being developed by Bakhtin in the first half of the 20th century (Bakhtin, 1986), such ideas only began to emerge in the context of American linguistics during the 1970’s, with the work of “ethnographers of speech”, in a conjoined effort of anthropology, sociolinguistics and pragmatics (Gumperz & Hymes, 1972; Bauman & Sherzer, 1974).
